Choose your website designer carefully

It really makes me mad to hear the stories of people who have spent thousands of dollars on a website developer, only to end up frustrated, stuck, or completely let down.

Some now have no website at all. Others have a website they cannot access, cannot edit, or do not know how to use. Many have been handed a cookie-cutter, templated website that completely misses their vision and does not reflect their brand.

Sadly, I hear of more horror website design stories than I hear of great experiences. This is far too common, and it’s exactly why I am so passionate about helping people choose their website designer carefully.

Why You Need to Be Careful

Web design can feel complex, especially if it is not your area of expertise. That’s why so many people turn to “experts” only to be taken for a ride. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and unsure if you are getting the value you deserve.

The truth is, web design is a complex process. It’s not just about making a site that looks nice. It’s about understanding your vision, your business, and your goals and consolidating that into a whole online home. Your website should feel alive with your vision, with your brand jumping off the page.

I’ve deeply refined this process over 60+ websites and counting. I know how to take your ideas, your brand essence, and your business story, and turn it into a website that works for you, not against you.

The platform you choose to build your website on also matters. I personally love Squarespace, as is the easiest, most effective choice. However, I first make sure I know your business before telling you what platform to use. And if I think you need a different platform that I don’t work with, I will refer you to someone that can help you that is more aligned.

For example, a Business Development client of mine needed a website with a lot of custom integrations. We realised Squarespace wouldn’t be able to support everything they needed, so they found someone who could build exactly what they wanted on WordPress. I am so stoked for them - their website is epic! It’s honestly one of the only great WordPress website stories I have to share haha.

WordPress is powerful, but only if you truly need highly custom integrations and advanced tech features. For most people, that level of complexity isn’t necessary and can often lead to extra stress, higher costs, and technical headaches.

Questions to Ask Yourself When Choosing a Web Designer

Before you hire someone, ask yourself these questions:

  1. Will I actually own and have access to my website once it’s complete?

  2. Will I know how to use and edit my website, or will I be reliant on the designer for every small change?

  3. Does the designer take the time to understand my vision and my brand, or do they work from cookie-cutter templates?

  4. Does the designer have experience delivering websites that are mobile responsive, user-friendly and functional for my audience?

  5. Is the platform they recommend right for my business needs, or is it just what they prefer to use?

  6. Do they offer ongoing support or guidance to help me make the most of my website?

Choosing the right website designer is an investment in your business, your brand, and your sanity.

Take your time, ask the right questions, and make sure you work with someone who truly understands your vision and knows how to bring it to life online.
